A Latvian man has been charged by the US Department of Justice with involvement in a Trickbot ransomware scam and attempting to pay a ransom in cryptocurrency.

According to CoinDesk on June 5, the US Department of Justice today announced that Latvian Alla Witte is involved in the global cybercriminal organization that created and distributed the Trickbot-banking malware computer program called Trickbot for consumers, businesses and other organizations. Trickbot ransomware informs victims that their computer is encrypted and should use Trickbot. Witte provides the Trickbot group with policies to track user licensed malware and develop tools and procedures to collect user credentials. The management of Bitcoin addresses by the team purchases specialized software to decrypt the data.
