Widespread application of ASIC mining could boost rates by 51% versus a factor of 2,000, according to Cointelegraph. presented the study with Maarten van Oordt of the Bank of Canada. This report examines the different attack rates of 51% depending on the type of device used to protect the Bitcoin network. Studies have shown that simply switching the network to 100% ASIC mining can improve security. The main reason is that ASIC miners use little to no fees outside of Bitcoin mining, and attackers don't get much return for selling the equipment in the attack. So, to be profitable, you need to use twice as much as Bitcoin, which is more expensive and harder to install. The study estimates that if ASIC miners are 100% up, 157,000 to 530,000 bitcoins will need to be licensed and benefit after the next halving.
